Suffolk is beautiful yet largely undiscovered part of England. The region is known for its quintessentially old English seaside towns and has good reputation for the arts and food. Indeed much of the food served in the region is locally grown, farmed or caught locally.
This course is suitable for amateurs, pros and journalists and is intended for anyone who wants to develop the skill of shooting to a brief. If you'd like to start earning from your photograph then this course will get you shooting images that sell.
| It is relevant to anyone who wants to learn how a pro photographer would approach an assignment and always get the shots regardless of weather or other challenges which the location presents.
The course will take the form of a travel assignment to photograph the area between the picturesque market town of Framlingham and the Heritage Coast some 10 miles away. There's plenty to shoot and plenty to challenge you!

The Brief and Preparation
Your assignment starts in Framlingham. The town has a friendly Saturday market and a medieval castle. In the market square, the Crown Hotel will act as our base for the first part of your assignment. Here we'll teach you how to put together a story and brief for the photographs to illustrate it, then we'll go and try it. This is your practice day and an important part of the process so we'll be giving you lots of guidance and feedback along the way. We'll show you how a pro would approach a shoot and make sure you're up to speed on all the technical aspects of photography that you'll need. This day will provide some interesting opportunities and challenges that will get you started on the assignment.

Dinner with the Tutors (optional)
On Saturday evening you are invited to join us for dinner in the Crown Hotel and enjoy a meal of specially selected local produce relevant to this Pro for a Day brief. This area of Suffolk offers everything from oysters to cider, cheese to salt marsh lamb, and there's even a vineyard in Framlingham. It'll be a fun and tasty way to enjoy each other's company, talk and set the scene for the next day.
The Assignment
On Sunday 27th we'll be out shooting like a pro. Nick and Chris will guide you early on and you'll be given mini-projects to get you started but then you'll have the opportunity to go and shoot on your own, knowing that we'll be there all the time to give you as much help and guidance as you need.
The brief will challenge you but it will also equip you to capture interesting and colourful images that capture a real tastes of Suffolk.
The Feedback Day
If you wish, you can opt to stay on and join us again on the Monday when we'll help you to edit and select your images to fulfil different types of use. This part of the process is just as important as the shoot itself as selecting the wrong images can seriously affect the chances of selling them or, if you're shooting for a portfolio, of catching the eye of the viewer.
The Tuition
As this photography course is highly interactive and requires time to review each photographer's approach to making images, the number of participants is strictly limited to 12 photographers.
Course tuition is under the guidance of award-winning professional photographers Nick Meers and Chris Coe. Nick and Chris have about 50 years of photographic experience between them, shooting everything from landscapes to cars, people to food, travel to architecture and abstracts to wildlife images. Their photography has taken them all over the world on commissioned work and stock shoots, photographing on film and digitally, in every format from 35mm to large format panoramics.
This photography course will be based at the Crown Hotel in the pictureque market town of Framlingham in Suffolk.
Accommodation: Not included in the course price. However you have two options:
-
We have arranged a special rate at the Crown Hotel in the square of the market town of Framlingham. This will also be the venue for the optional dinner with the tutors on the Saturday evening.
-
We can provide a list of local hotels and B&Bs on request
- accommodation at the Crown includes breakfast. Other meals and drinks are not included.

“With photography, everything is in the eye and these days I feel young photographers are missing the point a bit. People always ask about cameras but it doesn't matter what camera you have. You can have the most modern camera in the world but if you don't have an eye, the camera is worthless. Young people know more about modern cameras and lighting than I do. When I started out in photography I didn't own an exposure meter - I couldn't , they didn't exist! I had to guess”
Alfred Eisenstaedt, photographer
